For a body to have an overall growth, it is also essential to indulge in mental activities. Just like humans, dogs too require mental stimulation from a tender age. Most pet dogs undergo training to maintain the required decorum of the house. But mental workouts in the form of games and team activities keep them enthusiastic. Engagement in brain activities prevents boredom while you are away from them. It also helps them relieve stress and minimizes aggression. Brain training games from a young age help in developing better memory and its sharpness. It allows dogs to follow and understand command and obedience training.

Below are some of the standard brain training games for you and your canine companion. As a result, you will improve the bond and understand each other better.

1. Find-a-treat

Dogs have a great sense of smell and can identify familiar fragrances from a considerable distance. It will prove useful in improving their smelling ability and coordinating their brain. While introducing the game, ensure that you start with simple hideout points. Keep the treat out of reach as if you were hiding it. You may also keep it at a visible distance. Let him start the search at your command and not before that. As days go by, hide the treat or the toy in a gradually difficult hiding place. Let your dog find it himself even if there is no victory in the first few minutes. The brain will act with a sense of smell and will enhance their searching skills.

2. Stack-the-rings

Brain training games do not necessarily have to include physical activities. One activity that you can continue indoors is using a ring stacker. Show your dog to stack all the differently-colored rings in the vertical stick. This activity will engage your canine for hours. It will also improve the paws, eye, and brain regulation. Although the game may seem easy for you, it will take days or even weeks to excel in it. In the beginning, you can start it as a group activity, but later let your dog continue on his own.

3. Unroll-the-towel

Treats are an encouraging booster for any game. Place a towel on a flat surface and tie a few goodies at different corners. They should not be visible from the outside. Let your dog unroll the towel and treat himself. Opening the knot with teeth will strengthen their gums and oral cavity. Likewise, the time spent will improve their patience level. In case you have more than one dog, you can either use a single but big towel and let them compete. Or else, try giving each of them an individual task.

4. Name-the-toy

There is no better way to improve memorizing skills than naming their favorite toys. Instead of handing a new toy each time, try to introduce it to your dog. Let them know about its specialty and give it a name. For example, name his favorite soft monkey-shaped toy Kong, and let him search it for you. This will help him memorize the word and also relate the name with the toy.

5. Clean-the mess

Do not encourage your furry companion to leave the scattered toys around the house. Let your dog put the toys back in a big basket after playtime. Ensure to join your dog for the first few weeks. It will help him understand the necessity and the process. Increase the difficulty level from an open-basket to a closed one. Gradually ask your dog to pet the toys in an empty drawer. In later stages, segregate different toys for different compartments. Along with brain stimulation, it will improve their organizing ability. It will minimize their destructive behavior.

6. Utility-Scavenging -Hunt

Since your pet is fond of eating and most likely has a particular time. You can utilize the opportunity to involve them in the process. First, let them know the place where you keep his utensils, like saucers, cups, dishes, etc. While you prepare their meal, ask them to find their belongings from the kitchen. Keep it at a minimal distance in the initial days. Let them know about the dedicated space. As a result, they will improve their bond with you and work hard for a meal. Likewise, after cleaning the dishes, let your canine place them in the same designated area for you.

7. Puzzles and interactive toys

Apart from the above do-it-yourself toys, you may also invest in some dog toys. Puzzles and interactive toys are readily available. Let your dog help you arrange the puzzle, and you can treat it to successful completion. Instead of using the same puzzle daily, invest in multiple, and use it alternate days. Further, you can also invest in interactive toys that have a hidden compartment for treats. Help your pet to understand the procedure and encourage self-playtime.

Involving your pet in different brain training activities will help them avoid loneliness. Dogs with a high temper can channelize their inner aggression. Similarly, they are a great alternative if you are not able to go out for a stroll. Hence, making fair use of the time spent together will turn productive for both of you.
